Доставка грузов материально-технического снабжения относится к хозяйственным перевозкам, связанным с обеспечением эксплуатацион­ных и строительных нужд железной дороги.
Органы материально-технического снабжения отгрузку материалов от поставщиков организуют по возможности так, чтобы они посту­пали получателям, минуя промежуточные склады. Такая доставка называется транзитной. Значительная часть продукции производст­венно-технического назначения поступает на материальные склады и оттуда небольшими партиями доставляется предприятиям.
Для своевременной доставки материалов потребителям применяют диспетчерскую связь между службой материально-технического обес­печения дороги и линейными подразделениями, а также между от­делами материально-технического снабжения отделений и производ­ственными кладовыми. По этой связи принимают суточные заявки, отвечают на запросы линии и решают другие вопросы по доставке ма­териалов. Все более широко применяется централизованная доставка как основная форма регулярного снабжения предприятий желез­нодорожного транспорта необходимыми материалами, запасными частями и изделиями.
Материалы с главного склада дороги и складов отделений на ли­нейные склады и к потребителям доставляют повагонными отправка­ми, сборно-раздаточными вагонами, в контейнерах и мелкими отправ­ками, а на многих участках дорог используют также и автотранспорт.
В специально оборудованных вагонах развозят негромоздкие цен­ные материалы и изделия в сравнительно небольших количествах. Эти вагоны приписаны к главным дорожным или отделенческим складам; они обращаются на линии по графику и сопровождаются йроводни-ками-раздатчиками.
Единая система материально-технического снабжения на желез­нодорожном транспорте исключает дублирование в работе организа­ций и создает условия для эффективного использования ресурсов и складского хозяйства. Разрабатывается и внедряется автоматизиро­ванная система управления материально-техническим обеспечением (АСУ МТО), являющаяся важным элементом комплексной автомати­зированной системы управления железнодорожным транспортом (АСУЖТ).
