Этот вид транспорта требует сравнительно небольших затрат на освоение путей сообщения. Средняя себестои­мость перевозок по внутренним водным путям примерно такая же, как и на железных дорогах.
По скорости доставки грузов речной транспорт уступает желез­нодорожному. Для повышения скоростей сообщения и экономических показателей на речном транспорте широко применяют новые суда, судовые составы и совершенствуют методы их эксплуатации. Вое больше применяются суда на подводных крыльях и на воздушной подушке. Они имеют небольшую грузоподъемность и предназначены главным образом для перевозки пассажиров.
К недостаткам, ограничивающим использование речных путей, относится извилистость, увеличивающая их длину, мелководье не-
которых рек в конце лета, прекращение судоходства в зимнее время. Навигационный период составляет на южных реках 240—270, на северных 120—150 дней в году. Этот период увеличивается при ис­пользовании ледокольного флота.
Речной транспорт применяют преимущественно для перевозок между пунктами, расположенными на речных путях, а также в сме­шанных железнодорожно-водных сообщениях и в последние годы в перевозках река—море. Перевозка водным транспортом массовых грузов (круглый лес, руда, соль, строительные материалы и др.) обходится значительно дешевле, чем по железной дороге.
Экономичность речного транспорта повышается при перевоз­ках на дальние расстояния, так как при этом в себестоимости перевозок уменьшается доля затрат по начальным и конечным операциям.
Морской транспорт имеет свои особенности. Скорость движения на морском транспорте выше, чем на речном. Себестоимость морских перевозок более низкая по сравнению с другими видами транспорта (за исключением трубопроводного). По регулярности перевозок мор­ской транспорт уступает железным дорогам, так как некоторые порты замерзают в зимнее время. Он является основным видом транспорта в обеспечении торговых связей СССР со многими странами и в обслужи­вании приморских районов страны.
