Для пригородного пассажирского сообщения на электрифицированных линиях используются электропоезда, состоящие из моторных и при­цепных электровагонов. Мощность моторного вагона рассчитана на передвижение совместно с одним или двумя прицепными вагонами. В зависимости от размера пассажиропотоков поезда формируются из 4, 6, 8, 10 и 12 вагонов. Для пригородных линий, электрифициро­ванных на постоянном токе, используются электропоезда серий ЭР1, ЭР2 (рис. 104), ЭР22, а для линий, работающих на переменном токе,— серий ЭР9П и ЭР9М.
Вагоны серий ЭР1, ЭР2, ЭР9 имеют кузова, длиной 19,6 м, вагоны серий ЭР22 — длиной 24 м.
Посадка и высадка пассажиров из вагонов электропоездов обычно производятся с высоких платформ.
Электропоезда ЭР2 и ЭР9 имеют подножки и могут эксплуатиро­ваться также на участках с низкими платформами. Все современные электропоезда имеют широкие раздвижные входные двери, управляе­мые машинистом с помощью сжатого воздуха.

Механическая часть вагонов состоит из кузова, тележек, сцепных приборов и тормозного оборудования. Сцепные приборы установлены на раме кузова. Для обеспечения большей плавности движения тележ­ки имеют двойное рессорное подвешивание с особыми устройствами для смягчения толчков. На моторных вагонах электропоездов серий ЭР1, ЭР2, ЭР22 и ЭР9 установлены четыре тяговых электродвигателя, имеющих опорно-рамную подвеску. В отличие от электровозных они имеют одностороннюю зубчатую -передачу и вентилятор, расположен­ный на валу якоря.
В основном электрическое оборудование электропоездов аналогично оборудованию электровозов; для увеличения площади пассажирскогй помещения оно размещается под кузовом и частично на крыше вагона. Управляется электропоезд с помощью контроллера из кабины маши­ниста. Принципы управления тяговыми электродвигателями те же, что и на электровозе, однако в электропоездах предусматривается устройство автоматического пуска, где специальное реле ускорения обеспечивает постепенное выключение пусковых резисторов или пере­ключение выводов вторичной обмотки трансформатора с поддержани­ем заданного пускового тока.
Для безопасности движения главная рукоятка контроллера сделана таким образом, чтобы машинист во время движения постоянно нажи­мал рукоятку. Достаточно снять руку с рукоятки контроллера, как немедленно произойдет автоматическое торможение.
На отдельных участках пригородных линий (Прибалтийская дорога) стали применять контактно-аккумуляторные поезда, состоящие из двух секций (6 вагонов). В пределах электрифицированных участ­ков поезда работают от контактной сети, за пределами этих участ­ков тяговые двигатели получают питание от аккумуляторной ба­тареи.
В 1975 г. Рижским вагоностроительным заводом выпущен четыр-падцативагонный электропоезд постоянного тока ЭР200, имеющий конструкционную скорость 200 км/ч (рис 105). Этот электропоезд предназначен для местного и дальнего пассажирского сообщения на линиях с высокоскоростным движением.
