С начала 50-х годов на железных дорогах все шире внедряется бес­стыковой путь, при котором повышается срок службы рельсов пример­но на 20%, шпал и балласта — на 10%, а затраты труда на текущее содержание пути снижаются на 20—30%. Кроме того, за счет устране­ния стыков существенно уменьшается износ колес подвижного состава и сопротивление движению поездов, что сокращает расход топлива или электроэнергии на тягу поездов. Резкое сокращение числа стыко­вых скреплений за счет сварки отдельных звеньев дает экономию ме­талла до 1,8 т на каждый километр пути.
Длина сварных плетей на сети дорог России обычно принимается около 800 м1, что соответствует длине обращающихся поездов. Плети на перегон доставляют специальными поездами из платформ, обору­дованных роликами. Между сварными плетями укладываются 2—4 пары уравнительных рельсов переменной длины (около 12,5 м) для се­зонной регулировки длины плетей перед летними и зимними периодами. Сваривают рельсы электроконтактным способом на стационарных или передвижных контактно-сварочных машинах.
Бесстыковой путь имеет и существенный недостаток — невозмож­ность изменения длины средней части плетей при колебаниях темпера­туры, что приводит к возникновению в рельсах дополнительных про­дольных растягивающих или сжимающих сил, которые достигают 100—200 кН. В жаркую погоду эти силы могут привести к выбросу пути в сторону, а в сильный мороз — к срезу стыковых болтов или из­лому рельса. Поэтому бесстыковой путь обычно укладывают на желе­зобетонных шпалах с раздельным скреплением и щебеночном балласте толщиной не менее 45 см. Балластную призму делают шире и тщатель­но уплотняют. Кроме того, периодически производят разрядку в рель­совых плетях температурных напряжений, для чего ослабляют скреп­ление рельсов со шпалами, начиная от кондов плети, и снимают урав­нительные рельсы. Снятие напряжения в плетях сопровождается удли­нением или укорочением их, после чего укладываются новые уравни­тельные рельсы длиннее или короче прежних.
Применение бесстыкового пути особенно эффективно на участках скоростного движения поездов, где к верхнему строению пути предъ­являются повышенные требобания. При смешанном скреплении рель­сы крепят на каждом конце шпалы пятью костылями. Путь надежно закрепляют от угона.
Особое внимание уделяется предотвращению и устранению волно­образного износа поверхности катания рельсов, который ликви­дируют шлифовкой их специальными рельсошлифовальными поездами.
